As soon as Leah McFall announced her INK Tour we were one of the first to book tickets; to hear this wonderful technically brilliant singer live on stage was something we did not want to miss, so we made sure we got tickets to the Birmingham event at The Sunflower Lounge, and the date ended up selling out.
The tour supports the EP that Leah McFall dropped just under three weeks ago. Lead singles from the EP included “Wolf Den” and “Happy Human” with a promotional video for instant grat single “Bottle It”.
Arriving at The Sunflower Lounge, it was clearly packed. It was the first show to sell out on her INK tour, and it was a surprise to see how small of a venue it was; yet, that made it more intimate and engaging.
First on was Post Collide. They were a duo who performed with a lot of energy and performance vibes. They knew how to get the crowd started, and that’s exactly what they did. The duo sang complete originals and nailed every single one of them even when there was technical difficulties with their microphones – talk about acting completely professional. Their vocals were on point from start to finish and they’re definitely an artist we’ll be keeping our eyes on.
The second support act was Odette. Her voice was magical, hypnotising us from the get-go. Her original songs were intriguing and we definitely wanted to hear more. She also covered Dionne Warwick’s “I Say A Little Prayer” made famous by Aretha Franklin; which suited her voice down to a tee. Odette easily prepared us for the main star.
On to the stage, came the headliner, Leah McFall. She knocked us out of the venue with her voice, blowing us away effortlessly. She had a varied set list, which saw her sing all six tracks from her INK EP.
Leah McFall nailed all six songs from the said EP , fully bringing it on The Sunflower Lounge stage. Her voice melted us easily, and they were so much better heard live. Our favourites definitely were “Colours At A Funeral”, “Happy Human”, and “Bottle It”. Those songs are still stuck in our heads right now. Yet, “Wolf Den”, “Ink”, and “Language” were just as incredible.
Some of the songs she sang were totally unheard giving the fans a little treat and testing the songs out on a crowd. We were obsessed with the last song she sang which does not have a name yet. If it was us, we’d call it “Make It On My Own”. It was pure fire throughout and we can see why she’s been calling it her “emo song”.
That wasn’t all though, she treated us to some covers – ones of which she performed on The Voice UK back when she was a contestant on series two. She performed Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”, Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You”, and Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”.
If anything, Leah McFall taught us to never give up on our dreams and to always be you, no one else. She’s an inspiration to us all and to be an independent artist and to have three sold out shows on a nationwide tour just goes to show that people can achieve their dreams. The future sure is looking bright for Leah McFall.
